The Best Spots to Place Pins on Your Backpack
The front pocket is the undisputed king of pin placement. It gets constant eyeballs, stays out of your armpit, and gives you a flat surface to work with. A standard backpack front pocket is roughly 10 by 8 inches, enough room for three to four standard pins without visual clutter.
Step 1: Identify a Flat Surface
Don't pin onto webbing or thick cordura seams. Instead, find a smooth nylon or canvas panel. Secret Podcast enamel pins use a 1.25-inch metal base, so they need a dead-flat section to grip properly. Look for areas without zipper pulls or adjuster buckles.
Step 2: Map the Layout Before Piercing
Lay your pins on a table and arrange them the way you want. Keep at least 1.5 inches between edges. A tight cluster can work, but give each pin enough room to spin its clutch. I've found that an odd number of pins (3, 5) creates a more balanced look than pairs.
Step 3: Push the Pin From the Outside
Line up the pin as close to perpendicular as you can, then push the post through the fabric with a swift, firm jab. Don't wiggle it side to side. That flexing can enlarge the hole and cause the pin to tilt after a week.
Step 4: Secure the Clutch With Purpose
For hard enamel pins, you'll get a butterfly clutch. Squeeze it closed fully. For rubber clutches, push until you hear a click. Check the inside of your bag to make sure the post came through clean. If it's above your shoulder line, test it with a shake.
Step 5: Reinforce High-Use Areas
If you're pinning onto a bag you toss around daily, add a small piece of duct tape or a felt backing on the inside to prevent the post from ripping the fabric. Another trick: use locking pin backs instead of the included clutches. These are a small upgrade that stops the panic of losing a pin in a crowd.
Pro tip: Avoid placing pins on the top handle. That spot gets gripped by your hand and can push the pin at an angle, which loosens the clutch over time. The bottom side pocket is also a trap, because it scrapes against walls and desks.
For this guide I used the Wild Kingdom Wolf Pin Set, which ships with rubber clutches. If you prefer a heavier clutch, the MSSP Logo Pin comes with a butterfly back.
